Film Festival's China Focus Aims to Advance Freedom in China

Ottawa - Among its selections this year, the Third Annual Free Thinking Film Festival presented two compelling films on China that aimed to generate awareness and discussion about fundamental issues such as freedom, democracy, and human rights.

“Death by China: One Lost Job at a Time” analyzes the cost to the U.S. of its trade relationship with China, highlighting growing trade imbalances, the regime’s unfair trade practices, and consequences in the U.S. such as factory closures, unemployment, and rising debt owed to China.

Chinese Consulate Warns Film Festival on ‘Harmful’ Offering

‘Free China,’ a film about the persecution of Falun Gong, was targeted

A Chinese consulate in the U.S. contacted a film festival to warn them away from a movie that documents violent persecution in China.

The consular official was told that “We’re in America,” according to the individual, and that the film would be shown nevertheless.

Michael Perlman, the filmmaker, understood the calls from the consulate to be an attempt at censorship. “This brazen attempt to silence free speech and expression of an American citizen in the United States by the Chinese government is dangerous and must be exposed so that these actions will not be repeated,” he was quoted as saying in a press release emailed by New Tang Dynasty Television, a co-producer of the documentary.

The documentary that aroused the phone calls is titled Free China: The Courage to Believe, and was directed by artist and activist Michael Perlman.
